Diamond in the rough - MENSA jigsaw (1000 pieces)

Soul destroying - and had I not have been checking it for a local group I think I probably would have given up. I can't say I garnered any real enjoyment until the last 100 pieces or so where it was clear I was going to win. I was able to connect smaller pieces by spotting small white chips, but then ended up with loads of small sections which proved tricky to connect. Ah well, I suppose this is what some puzzlers enjoy...

Time taken: I lost count...

  1. You are quite right; soul destroying. Besides white flecks, any other suggestions to keep going?!

  2. I'm so sorry for not responding - need to try to work out how to set up notifications. I ended up laying pieces out in groups and doing a process of elimination by placing pieces in one at a time until they fit.

This puzzle has 1,000 pcs…all virtually alike. Each piece has two opposing tabs and two opposing slots. This is not much help organizing the pieces. The coloration is almost totally grays, light and dark blues and a scattering of white. There are occasional small splashes of reds This is also not much help organizing pieces.
About 40% into the puzzle, I was about to give up when I made a discovery.
This puzzle has a rhythm to the cut. All of the pieces could be separated into two groups…vertical and horizontal. Refer to the attached sketch. The vertical pieces have a fat top, the tabs are centered and the slots are off center. The horizontal pieces have tabs that are off center and slots that are centered.
All the pieces can be separated into two groups…vertical and horizontal. Also, the orientation of the pieces is always the same. So each group can be organized by orienting them all the same. Additional organization can be done by color shading…mostly dark or light and pieces with white etc.
    Happy puzzling.

  6. It took me 2 weeks...I organised the pieces into big peices with tabs up and down, small pieces with tabs up and down and long pieces with tabs up and down...once I got about 100 odd pieces on I looked to see where the big pieces might fit and worked from there...hope that makes sense and helps...I had 4 pieces missing!!!!

  7. I've completed the jigsaw, but can't find the diamond. Where is it?

  8. Did your puzzle come with a photo of the completed puzzle? (Without showing the pieces, if that makes sense.) Looking for a ‘guide’ to follow (though I know some consider that cheating).

  9. I honestly can’t remember, but don’t think so. Just the picture on the box.

  10. I have just finished this after four weeks and one drop! Thanks almost entirely to the picture above. I have one of my own, if someone could tell me where to put it?

  11. About 50% in to this puzzle and agree with others this is a real challenge, found the only way to make any progress at all was to do a lot of time consuming shape sorting. I honestly thou g2g t I was good at puzzles until I started this one, reckon I've got at least another 2 weeks work.
